Alcatel announced today a contract with Combellga, one of Russia’s carriers, to enhance its existing voice network by using a next-generation IP-based infrastructure to interconnect its local services areas. Alcatel NGN solution enables Combellga to initiate IP telephony and a range of multimedia services for home and business (i.e. videoconferencing, instant messaging) from the same converged voice/data platform.
Alcatel is providing the Alcatel 5020 Softswitch, a scalable, carrier grade platform that allows service providers to deploy next-generation services on their existing networks. The contract also covers the Alcatel Media and Signaling Gateways, which provide interworking between the public switched telephone network (PSTN) and IP networks. These products are part of the Alcatel Open Path to Enhanced Networking (OPEN) portfolio of NGN solutions.
