Equant has signed a multi-million dollar deal with DSM, the Dutch specialty chemicals producer of life science products and performance materials, to provide and manage a global IP VPN covering 180 sites. Equant will provide a MPLS-based network to link DSM’s offices and production facilities globally, while a DSL network will also connect satellite offices, giving users easy access to the corporate network and business-critical applications, such as SAP.

In total, the IP VPN will connect 45 countries and 23,000 staff. At the same time, Equant will provide a network management service encompassing life cycle management, extended fault and project management.

“The IP VPN provided by Equant will help us lower the cost of maintaining and managing our global network,” said Jo van den Hanenberg, Chief Information Officer of DSM. “With over 23,000 employees worldwide, we need a secure, cost-effective IP-based network for easier communication between sites that will also meet the future needs of the company as described in the recently presented strategy Vision 2010: Building on Strengths. After reviewing other providers, we selected Equant for its track record, ease of migration and far-reaching network. ”

The Equant IP VPN will provide DSM with a Wide Area Network service for its future communication needs. DSM’s IP-based Global Network (DGN) connects all DSM businesses, but the company aims to reduce acquisition, operation and contract management costs further by selecting the right services from the right service provider.
