The 3G won’t succeed unless mobile operators work closely with content owners and premium content service providers to give consumers the wide choice of content they demand, claims Toby Padgham, managing director for World Telemedia.

Now in its 15th year, World Telemedia is a European forum for carriers, service providers and content owners to discuss profitable on-line business. This year’s event will take place at the Krasnopolsky Hotel in Amsterdam, 27-29 April 2003.

“3G operators must learn from 2.5G and from the experience of i-mode operators in Japan, Korea and the Netherlands. There are many premium content service providers and content owners eyeing 3G with interest but they don’t yet know how to work with operators to get their services to market. How will 3G billing work, for example? What opportunities will MMS bring?,” inquiries Padgham.

“Although the convenience of 3G has much to offer consumers, that won’t be enough in itself to capture significant market share from internet and fixed line telephony service providers. 3G operators must not only work with video games developers, record producers, sports content owners, gaming specialists, media owners and content owners – but also with independent service providers who know how to get online services to market and make money from them,” he adds.

Keynote speeches at this year’s World Telemedia include Mike Short, vice president, O2 and chairman, Mobile Data Association, John Brewer, general manager, International Products, MSN, Unico Glorie, Interactive Media and (Mobile) Telephony, executive board, Endemol.
