Siemens mobile will be a supplier for the complete radio and core network technology to set up a 3G/UMTS network in Poland for Polish mobile operator Polska Telefonia Cyfrowa (PTC). The scope of delivery will also include 3G/UMTS mobile telephones. In the initial stage PTC wants to provide the capital Warsaw with the new technology.

“With this second 3G/UMTS success in Eastern Europe – the first came from T-Mobile in the Czech Republic – we are reinforcing our leading position in 3G mobile networks”, said Christoph Caselitz, president of Networks within Siemens mobile.

The shareholders of PTC are Elektrim-Telekomunikacja (51 per cent), a joint venture of Vivendi and Elektrim, and the mobile phone group T-Mobile International (49 per cent). With more than 6.1 million subscribers the company is one of the largest mobile providers in Poland.

Siemens mobile has been equipping PTC with GSM infrastructure since 1996 and in 2001 it established a 3G/UMTS test network in Poland for this customer.
