The General Shareholders’ Meeting of Cesky Telecom approved several changes in its Supervisory Board. Following the meeting, the Supervisory Board itself appointed Julio Linares as its new chairman. Jaime Smith was also appointed CEO of Cesky Telecom and chairman of the Czech company’s Board of Directors.

During the past two months, Jaime Smith has been an observer on the Supervisory Board and prior to that held the post of CFO of Telefónica de España (the Telefónica group’s fixed line business in Spain) since 2002. Cesky Telecom’s new CEO expressed his satisfaction at his appointment and the new responsibilities it would bring with it. He also pointed out that the Czech group has “one of the key assets to ensure that our project is a success: the confidence of our customers and a qualified and committed professional team which has shown that it can compete with the best. We firmly believe that the international experience of Telefónica will underpin Cesky’s growth and benefit its customers with new quality products, in line with best European and international practices”.

Jaime Smith has decided to create three new areas under his direct management, responsible for running the main areas of the Czech operator business. The first one is a commercial division, headed by Fernando Astiaso who will be responsible for the areas of marketing, sales and international business. The second one is an operations division, under Petr Slovacek’s responsability, who will be in charge of running networks, operations and IT. The third one, overseeing finance and resources, will be responsible for areas including finance, human resources and security and will headed by Juraj Šedivý. Julio Linares, chairman of Telefónica de España stated after his appointment that Telefónica’s commitment is “to help the socio-economic development of this great country through a dynamic sector such as telecommunications”.

Mr. Linares described the privatisation of the operator as “exemplary” and stated that “we are convinced that the sum of experience of Cesky Telecom and Telefónica will translate into a singular contribution to the development of this country, whose growth profile is at the forefront of Europe and whose economy is stable
