Royal Mail UK (RM) announced a deal with Care First, a provider of counselling related services, for the implementation of a confidential line to help employees victim of harassment.
The free helpline will provide counselling and support on a 24 hours a day, seven days a week basis. Employees will be able to get advice from independent and counsellors who will forward them with information in case they want further legal action.
On 27 Jan. all staff in the East Midlands, East Anglia, Greater London and South East will be able to use the service. In April this facility should be extended to all RM personnel.
Developments to implement the helpline began months ago, and on last week the Equal Opportunities Commission announced it was launching a formal investigation on the issue of sexual harassment of female postal workers.
Quite frankly, Ive been appalled by the cases of bullying I have heard about since I joined Royal Mail. These have been some of the worst cases I have heard about in my working life. There will be no place in this company for anyone who has bullied another member of staff, said Allan Leighton, chairman of RM.
Further to the helpline, RM Group will start a mass coaching programme to eradicate bullying. All staff will be trained to ensure they are aware of harassment conducts and of the procedures they can follow to solve potential problems. All the 10,000 RM managers will also be trained to detect and stamp out any misconducts.
24 Hour Counselling and Information is one of the facilities supplied by Care First, a subsidiary of General Healthcare Group Ltd, providing counselling related services from Employee Assistance Programmes to Stress Audit and Performance Management. This facility gives support, via a 0800 line, on issues like face to face solution focused counselling, legal and information services, critical incident management and defusion and training services .
