607 — Siebel urges FBI to investigate leaked docs

Siebel, a world provider of CRM software, announced that corporate leaked documents were distributed with “very malicious intent”. Steve Mankoff, a senior vice president at Siebel, told journalists that paper copies of eight pages from the report were distributed to traders, analysts and reporters over the past week. He added that the documents were part of a customer satisfaction report that included both negative and positive feedback, but that only the negative comments had been leaked.

“They were taken out of context,” Mankoff said. He added that some of the problems to which the comments referred were later fixed in patches to its software. Mankoff said Siebel has contacted the FBI about the incident and decided to go public with the information in order to prevent a wider spread.

Siebel has long been known for boasting customer satisfaction ratings of more than 95 percent, a level some analysts have criticised as being unrealistic. Mankoff released other data from the report, via Webcast, to show that Siebel ‘s customers were highly satisfied with the company’s products and that nine out of 10 of them would recommend the company to others.

Siebel, which is struggling to regain profitability amid weak corporate spending on information technology, warned last Friday that its sales in the first quarter would be much lower than expected, after key deals got postponed amid an uncertain economic environment.
